about

When Wolfgang Maiwald surprisingly debuted with the CD ‘Two Faces’ in 2010, he insinuated to his listeners that he was showing two audile faces. One emanating the influence of rock and pop from the eighties, the other one enlightened by the inspiring jazz performances of pianists like Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. In retrospective, one might conclude that Maiwald was looking for his own voice. With ‘The Silent Ones, his new CD, he appears to have found it.

The new album showcases a contemporary jazz piano trio, tastefully indulging in the pianist’s beautiful compositions. Of course, Maiwald is the first among peers, but he also grants his partners ample space, often leading to a superior unity.

Wolfgang Maiwald did compose nine of the twelve pieces featured on ‘The Silent Ones’. Guus Bakker contributed ‘Fournette’, the freest composition, based on the style of Ornette Coleman, in which the bassist plays a substantial role. In addition, Wolfgang unearthed Herbie Hancock’s musical gem ‘Sunrisa’, as well as the more familiar ‘Lament’ by trombonist J.J. Johnson.

Maiwald is an admirer of others, which he likes to show in his writing. In ‘Tribute to Rob, he honors his teacher Rob Madna with a ballad that recollects the intellectual deliberation of this renowned pianist. ‘ToonTune’ is dedicated to Dutch saxophonist Toon Roos who will be celebrating his 50th anniversary this year, and with ‘Mr J.T.’ he shows his respect for British pianist John Taylor.

In all pieces, with highlights like ‘Song of Songs’, the rotating ‘Circles’ and the title-track ‘The Silent Ones’, Wolfgang Maiwald establishes himself as a skillful, lyrical, melody-loving pianist who has claimed his position in Europe’s major league of jazz pianists.
